I visited Ayutthaya in 1999 It looks so different now I don't think I had to pay anything to view the temple's I arrived by train and I remember being ferried across the river in a small boat to get to the town One of the temple's had a stairway down into the centre where there were murals painted I must go back again

Normally in most of the head will have treasury in it brbrSo when Burmese won the last war with Ayutthaya they rip off all the treasury from Ayutthaya, Siam (Thailand) brbrNormally when Thailand or Burmese won the war they will not ripped all the treasury but they will leave a high ranking soldier to be a ruler to the city to control the city The ruler will have an army by side to make sure he can control the city brbrBut that last war Burmese had to retreat the troop back north coz Chinese army were heading down to them and they need all of their army back asap They cannot leave anyone to rule Ayutthaya brbrThey order a small group of soldier to get all the treasury back They had burnt thing down to burn and melt all of the things down to get gold back, included cutting Buddha image head to find treasury inside 🙂

The 3 spiked chedis in a row can also be seen in the Mortal Kombat films and games The reclining Buddha is in the Street Fighter 2 game The grounds surrounding the head in the tree were in Jean Claude Van Damme's film Kickboxer, during his training sequence There is also a massive white pyramid temple ten minutes away by tuk tuk, and a toy museum that boasts to have one of the largest action figure collections on earth I suggest 2 days for Ayutthaya

Hi Paddy, To answer your question: The Burmese army stole the Buddha heads when they invaded the old capital of Ayutthaya in about 1767 This was the ultimate insult to the Thais Legend has it that the head surrounded by tree roots was dropped by a fleeing Burmese soldier Cheers Love Ayutthaya!

As for why the Buddha statues are missing their heads, there are two explanations; a propagandistic one, and a new "unaltered" onebrbrFor the propagandistic one, Thais are taught in school that when Ayutthaya was about to fall, the Burmese raided the city and cut off the Buddha statues' heads as that's where the people kept gold and treasure Eventually Ayutthaya burned to the ground and King Taksin the Great moved the capital to Thonburi So Thonburi became the new capital for 15 years, before King Rama I moved the capital east of the Chao Phraya river to Rattanakosin, or Bangkok as we know it todaybrbrFor the new "unaltered" one, it's almost the same as the one above, but the ones who cut off the Buddha statues' heads were the people of Ayutthaya themselves, not the Burmese Imagine being surrounded, resources getting depleted without any means to gather new ones In trying times like those, you'd naturally resort to the gold and treasure you've kept in secret, like getting out the gold you kept in your safe as a last resort Also, King Rama I didn't peacefully move the capital from Thonburi to Bangkok, but that's all I can say because I'm living in Thailand and I don't want to go to jail LOL
