My girlfriend is a 27-year old female from Durban She moved to the USA very recently for school She told me she will never, ever go back In her words “It’s a beautiful place to visit and a shitty place to live”brbrThere’s been some civil unrest recently, she said it got to the point where she didn’t feel safe in her own home Her parents are rich by South African standards and live in a good neighborhood brbrProbably not a good vacation destination for anyone who hasn’t visited high-crime areas in the past

I'm from Tongaat (near the airport) originally and went back to SA and Durban after 19 years Have to balance between being prepared and realising paranoia There's usually security or police around, so you can go to those areas My recommendation would be a Drakensberg tour which is two hours away Can be a daytrip Lot's of "vibes" from the ancient mountains and cave paintings

38 years old, lived in Durban my whole life basically in a nutshell (and i rewrote this several times) It is not safe you can come here and have an amazing experience, especially on the North coast, but there is ALWAYS a chance that something will happen Durban has a lot of nice suburbs, but shanty towns basically surround all of them In Durban you are never far from an informal settlement, so that means crime is always a problem So its a beautiful place and well worth a visit but you have to have your wits about you
