I recommend taking the 8 tram to DE and the 3 tram to F when in Basel The groceries are way cheaper and it’s cool to ride a tram to another country brbrRheinschwimmen is free! Just hop in the Rhein by the Tingley Museum and hop out wherever you want - we always hit up a buvette, not free for biers after and kick it Comment from : Jeff Carrier |

My mom, who is 83 years, would like to visit Bern, Switerland She is in a wheelchair so that may prove a bit difficultbrHow handicapped accessible are places like Zurich and Bern? brAlso I have tried to look for flights into Bern but wasn't able to find any from the states Does that mean, we would need to fly into Zurich and travel on land to Bern? Or is there a better option?brOne thing I have been fustrated about with sites like Orbitz and Expedia, is that packaged deals (like flight and hotel) only show hotels for the desitnation Like if we want to fly into zurich and travel to Bern, how can we get the search to show that without paying a separate (and possibly a more) price? Comment from : Bill Simonis |
I will say a meal at a cafe is cheaper than a meal at McDonalds from my experience McDonalds was very expensive around $25 per meal whereas I would get delicious meals at local cafes for $20-25 (better quality food and more filling) Comment from : Jennas Kingdom |

Try to find hotels with free breakfast is key because you can grab a few snacks for later You will spend money in CH but yes try to get lunch at a grocery store COOP, Migros etc) my wife and I for dinners will just do the same Something from grocery store I took my dad to CH back in May and he nearly had a heart attack at the price of things I was already immune Comment from : SimplyGregsterEV |

I was in Zurich last month and OMG it was one of the best parts of my trip Summertime swimming in the lake and beers on the grass Great way to beat the heat, and wasn't pricy Comment from : The Canna Guide |
If you take kids with you, get a Junior Swiss Pass They cost 30 Franks per year per kid and you can use all transportation and a lot of cable cars without buying an extra ticket for them This pays off after only a few short trips already! Comment from : Calamity Jane |
If you have a pass for the public transport anyway, look for accomodation outside of the cities and touristic hotspots Often you'll find cheaper options just a 20 minutes train ride away Comment from : 37wilde |
My friend in Bern welcomes guests for free as couchsurfers He has a lot of private, extra space Comment from : amy kru |
Some people come to NY city and eat fast food for two weeks, they save money eating garbage and gaining weight , so don't go to to Switzerland if you gonna eat crap Comment from : Hernán Montero |

Thanks for sharing, it`s interesting that for someone living here, -i have come to accept how expensive it isAnyway, we only not bice the difference when/b I travel to neighboring countriesIt`s just so true that doing Switzerland on a budget is almost impossible but doable I have really enjoyed your video even as a localMacdonalds too is expensive, yesterday(17th july) I got a small portion french fries and regular burger and it cost me $(CHF) 14 bwithout a drink!!!!!!!!/bbrI admire people who vacation in Switzerland, it`s really worth the visit but if I were in another country, I`m not sure I could justify spending so much money on a budget vacation Comment from : Rika |
You can also try delis, small grocery stores I am from Canada and will be on a 28 day trip November 15 this year - Murren Switzerland, Tromso Norway, Paris and Anchorage Alaska, and all my hotels except for Paris provide breakfast, having said that, having breakfast involved is not always worth it And if you check the web, there are always travel cost guides (broken down) for certain countries and they are reliable Comment from : Issy Bella |
If you want to eat out, some places will offer a lunch deal Indeed many museums will do free days once a month Taking a ferry can also be a cheap way to see a lot of the country for cheap (eg in Luzern) As for the trains, always book in advance the 'sparpreis'-tickets, this can mean you get the same ticket for a third of the price If you book in advance, you can also book train day passes which means you can see a lot of different places cheap Some places in Switzerland are also a nice one day trip from abroad, eg Lugano from Milan and Geneva from France and Zurich/Basel from Germany Comment from : BramowitchIII |

As far as I know there's also some sort of travel card for non-residents of Switzerland that you can get for a set amount of money If you're going around by train a couple of times that might already be worth it I don't know much about this card because I don't use it (I live here) but I have seen it advertised Comment from : Jonistan |
Except, I live in Switzerland, my sister and her family coming with a car They have free accommodation( of course) and bring a lot of food with them Comment from : nordthern lights |

From a swiss: how much it will cost you, really depends on what you want to do Accommodation and food will be expensive, but you can go all day without spending a single dime from there on For example in the Engadine valley, public transport is included in your hotel and you can go hiking, biking, wind/kite/wing surfing etc For free Comment from : Just Luke |
Local Basel resident here Depending on the duration of your visit, absolutely buy some sort of transportation reduction (a pass, a 50 discount, called a Halbtax, or a multiday travel ticket) Generally speaking, meals everywhere will be high quality and expensive Alternatives include simple prepared options in the supermarkets (sandwiches, savory pastries, quiches) or go to a neighborhood bakery, which will also offer a variety of sandwiches, quiches, and savory options The two big supermarket chains, Migros and COOP, offer a good variety of take-away The larger markets often have sit down restaurants In the summer "buvettes" pop up along the Rhine River where you can get a simple meal in a charming location A super expensive option would be to buy a baguette and some sliced meat or cheese and make a simple sandwich Some fruit Some chocolate Some wine What more do you want Inexpensive hotels in Switzerland are not crummy, They are simple They will be spic n span clean and comfortable Just few amenities Tipping is not required, but round up to the nearest franc or nearest 5 francs (depending on the size of the tab) is a courtesy and appreciated Bottled water in restaurants is insanely expensive Think: CHF 12 per liter Costs are high in Switzerland because workers earn good wages Prevailing minimum wage is about CHF 25/hour Overall, although prices are high, quality is also high You'll get what you pay for Comment from : Jeremiah Reilly |
On the water thing brIn the german speaking part you can actually just refill your bottles on most water fountains as long as it isn't written to not be drinkable because Swiss fountains do just use tap water in most cases Comment from : Zwergblaubarsch |
eat at train stations Comment from : MrHmjg |
I live in Switzerland and i must say, most of the best things come for free here! Swim in the lakes, drive up a mountain and hike the last stretch etc Also for food: Coop Restaurant is probably the cheapest for a hot meal, i would not necessarily recommend McDo as it is expensive for what it is Comment from : Joel W |
I am from Switzerland There is no German Part What Wolter means is German speaking part He actually should know that brMcDonald's is a big no go because one purpose of Travelling is to try local food Why not going to the Coop or Migros Restaurant where they often serve typical Swiss Dishes? Furthermore, it's cheaper than McDbrAnd Guys Visiting Austria is not a replacement There are similarities but it's definitely not the same Comment from : Phil Wüthrich |
The tips are kinda uselesshow about eating lunch at Coop or Migros restaurant? McDonalds is cheap? Fill up the water bottle? This video was not worth it Comment from : Ana Ma |
Very easy actually even with a 4 star hotel I think on my latest trip I have spent on local travel / food / cigars about 50-60 francs per day If you don’t want to break the bank Get good takeaway food / visit a normal supermarket And you are done Comment from : The Shadow Man |

Other free outdoor stuff to do: Some baths in lakes or rivers are free (in Zurich most river bath are) Look out for things happening outdoors like festivals or sport events, they might be free to watch On rainy days, especially with kids, there are free indoor places you can visit In Zurich for example the greenhouses of the botanical garden, the palm house and tropical house of the Stadtgärtnerei and the zoological and palaeontological Museum of the University or the Sukkulentensamlung (succulent plant collection) Comment from : Wolf Stettler |

In summer 2017, my daughter and I were traveling around Europe on a pretty low budget We found a fairly large bag of roasted peanuts at a COOP for maybe 4 Euros! I couldn't believe I had found something so "cheap" to eat in Switzerland! We ate them so much as a snack on hikes and other times it took awhile to like them again after we got back to Seattle! 🤣 Comment from : Alex Alex |

If staying in switzerland, avoid eating at mcdonald's You will pay about 18$ a menu when you could eat for more like 10$-12$ at chinese or turkish restaurants, or even pizzas to takeout brIf you can find a manor, definitely head there : cheap and good food for take away Comment from : Léo Tarazi |

Junk Food isn`t that much less expensive in Switzerland that normal food If go to MCDonald`s and pick de medium Menu you land around 15-17CHF But you already get a good pizza for 20-25CHF and you get much more food (my opinion) But consider the Migros and Coop`s Restaurant, they make also a good price brAnd if you consider to make the travel all by train, maybe Interrail is something for you Its a pass where for X-Days all the trains, busses and some ferrys are included This pass is also
bravailable for other countrys in Europe Comment from : bandof1291 |
Switzerland on a budget? ahahahahaha Comment from : Jorge Mendes |
Not impossible to have a cheap vacation in Switzerland Having friends there makes it the cheapest part of any trip for me Knowing where the cheap places to eat are helps and being able to buy groceries and cook a meal is a big budget saver Truthfully I lived there for long enough to have seen most attractions and don't have that expense anymore Comment from : Gerry Parker |
Swiss farmers markets are a great option for grocery shopping, especially if you want cheese Comment from : Flo Punkt |
Pretty much what I would have recommended as a swiss myselfbrbrAND! Not really to save money, but to potentially save lifes:brThe Alps aren't a joke! Flip-Flops or High-Heels aren't proper hiking-shoes! If the weather gets worse, get the f out of there! The last thing you want to experience is a thunder-storm while on the top of a Mountain in the Alps (out in the open), because it could be the last thing you'll ever experiencebrAlso for the Paragliders and especially Base-Jumpers: Winds around mountains / rockcliffs can be extremly erratic! Sooner or later your luck will run out if you f around with them too much and they will just throw you into a mountain-sidebrbrA few weeks ago I was on a mountain-top myself ("just" 1800m) - it was pretty foggy/inside a cloud and at one point, it started to snow a bit - it snowed upwards, because of the strong upwinds really surreal to stand there and see snow "falling" upwards Comment from : Sascha W |

Heading to Switzerland during the December month, going to be fun 😊 Comment from : Mutton Curry |

Please do not go to Mc Donalds while you are here in Switzerland, -go to the turkish Imbiss You will find much (!) better food for less money! Mac is NO Food at all Comment from : Taghi Abiri |

How to visit Switzerland on a budget? Answer: Don't go to Switzerland I bought a bottle of water and paid 5 Francs Comment from : Chuck Draper |
Yup, unless you work a corporate job with a decent salary, we don't eat at restaurants that often It's more of a treat for special occasions If you ever want to do more research about what to do in Basel, Zürich or Berne, I'll gladly be of help Comment from : Frank Wenzel |
Your suggestions are generally very helpful At Mc Donalds, however, I find it a little difficult, especially since I don't think it's "cheap", and after about 15 hours you're hungry again like beforebrAnother tip, especially for Basel with this beautiful weather; why not buy something in a shop to grill (it doesn't always have to be meat) and use one of the electric grill plates that are available on the bank (I think 1-2 CHF, although you can also share them if you ask nicely )? Eating on the banks of the Rhine, more Basel is almost impossible (ok, swimming in the Rhine would also be part of it) Comment from : Xxx_Phantom_xxX [W_T_A] |
Great video , thanks! Comment from : sagaz 2000 |

Thanks for these tips Mark! Really want to visit Switzerland, but it just seems so expensive - guess I’ll need to save up! Comment from : Shimon Meets World |
Still cheaper than USA Comment from : Cristy B |
One thing to add: If you do decide to eat out, remember there is no "mandatory tip" You don't have to feel awkward not tipping, completely ok in Switzerland Comment from : Gábor Bartók |
A big tip for "cheaper" food at least in the bigger cities like Zürich is to look for restaurants that have a Lunch menu Many restaurants have a lunch menu during the work week which is usually around CHF 20- and most of the time they even includes a salad or soup However you will find those restaurants more around office locations than tourist locations Another tip is to go around 11:45 before all the workers fill up the place at noon Also be aware a lot of restaurants charge for tap water Comment from : Stefan Schüller |
