Another tip, I'm from southern NZ & sadly this seems to be disappearing somewhat (our population has diluted somewhat from when I was a kid) but if you have visitors & you're going to eat or have a beer it's polite to offer and ask them join you, call it a southern hospitality thing, treating guests well is something all cultures should cherish Further if I'm off to do something fun, boating, fishing, hiking etc & I get an unexpected visitor & have capacity, they could very well be welcome to join me As to tipping just a side note, whilst it's widely advertised "do not tip in NZ" its not always a solid rule, in some situations it happens (I grew up here & very occasionally I tip, there's generally a reason & it's not expected but hey sometimes it might be appropriate) NZ has internationalized somewhat, while we are a very inclusive & accepting culture this has its flip sides I for one don't want us to dilute the base ethos of friendliess & inclusiveness I grew up with (I realize that it's happened in a lot of areas already, doesn't mean I like it), if we all try it will survive if we let it go its gone forever Another side note from a remote born local (this is a major peeve probably NO NO number 1 & its not a popular subject BUT) often visitors travel by car, camp etc if you "gotta go" get well off the track (not 1m (usually its mid track right at the start OMG!!), I mean 50m plus) What is happening as a result of people not doing this is camping options even very remote ones are being closed I was taught the following rules: Pick up "any" rubbish which includes stuff you find If you need a toilet remotely thats OK BUT think about where (get well away from where someone will stumble onto it), & you should be burying it (at least try) Not near waterways either Hey that aside, we welcome you

That carving on the stone looks like the one on Lake Taupo hidden out of the way when I was a kid and discovered it when we did this thing in Te Kuiti High School when we went to Turangi for a week at the end of the year and learnt to rock climb, camp, cross rivers A whole heap of different things and we camped as 16 year old's near that carving some of the best memories I have Apart from Vietnam which I adore!!!! and Dublin right next to U2's studio and offices on the river!! fabulous places I have been to some of them I done a fair few

some of your info is not correct and not informative depends on where you live in NZ and time of year No Crowds really, have you ever been shopping on Boxing day (DEC 26th) at the warehouse? No matter where you go in the world there are crowds unless you live in the whop whop's where your nearest neighbor is a mile down the road and it takes emergency vehicles forever to get to you No offense but you give cheese heads a bad name Hell even kiwis would be disappointed!
