Lovely video--I'm glad to say I've been to most of those on your list and they're well worth a visit for anyone who loves historic architecture, decorative arts, and Hudson River scenery There are two more mansions I'd like to mention: Lindenwald, in Kinderhook, the home of President Martin Van Buren; and Edgewater, in Barrytown, which used to be privately owned but was sold in 2018 to the Classical American Homes Preservation Trust and is now open to the public Comment from : Paul Schlotthauer |

I was born and raised here and lived here my whole life The fall is beautiful!!💜🌈💜Whats funny back in 1982 my first apartment I could see the Hudson River from every room my little apartment the walkway on the Hudson and Hudson River Bridge!! The walkway was just a rundown railroad bridge at the time I had quite the view beautiful sunsets and my rent was even cheaper that the average rent at that time A whopping $175 a month plus utilities!! I can only imagine what the charge now 2023! I grew up in Staatsburg, NewYork border Hyde Park My grandmother bought house and land only 4 thousand dollars and my family build their houses there including my Dad My High school was on road we lived called Franklin D Roosevelt My grandma remember Roosevelt drive down our road She moved here from NJ in mid 1940s Comment from : GodsLorrainbow |

This is very interesting and live West of Albany and have not visited yet any of these mansions, and now see we really should!brbr There are some more West of Albany as the Clark family owned the large mansion which they have been doing over now with donations and they charge a little for tours of the Hyde Park at Glimmerglass State Park The Carter's own alot of land which now is a lovely are on the lake hear Cooperstown NH and this mansion sits high on a hill, they have various events during the Summer months, and the tours are very nice It is a ''fifty'' room mansion (Not sure if videos are allowed though, so guess, I am sure you always ask anyway?) bThis may be one more you would like to add to your documentaries?/b They do have quite a history and the family also had much land in other countries as they had workers on their Jamaican lands, and they moved from England and MrCarter had a wife who would not move with him and later he re- married Fenimore Cooper's, brother's widow In the end, the family made her leave once her husband passed and the young part of the family took over brbrForgot just where it fits in, but think at some point the Clark family are involved in living there or owning it also, but do not remember just how it fit in, or if it did? Would need to red up on this again I have been there, but it was while ago brbrAlso, they have had people who have in the past mentioned seeing a glimpse of perhaps the spirit of Mr Carter and other interesting stories too numerous to mention, Thank you for sharing these lovely historic mansions! I do have a question about these places Many were "donated" to the state of New York There must be expensive upkeep, and do any entrance charges cover that or are they a tax burden for the public? There were some trusts mentioned It just seems to follow how the very wealthy and particularly now with massive tax breaks, basically welfare for the wealthy, are more of a drain and less so contribute One nice thing is that acreage is conserved and less developed with multiple probably gated dwellings Comment from : jane freeman |
|

Quite interesting, but this wouldn't be the internet if there weren't someone like me to nitpick Springwood, the Roosevelt estate, certainly wasn't 1000 square miles--one square mile is closer to the true figure And who is President William Fillmore, who married in the Schuyler mansion in 1855? We had a President Millard Fillmore, but he married, for the second time, in 1858, to a woman with a different name than you gave I'm not sure where, but they lived in the Buffalo area, not near the Hudson Comment from : James Clendon |
