I love Dumai Great description of the local area btw I would advice anybody wanting to travel to these parts of Indonesia to not go until they have extensive experience traveling and not just been to Bali a couple of times There is no tourist apps for these areas so everything will rely you having to build relationships with the locals and knowing the languagebrIndonesia is a great place, I have never felt "unsafe" If I may point out a couple of updated information for people wanting to enter indonesia this way:brYou can take the express ferry from Port Klang My - Dumai id 25hr or Malaka My - Dumai In 2hr or Singapore - Batam In 40mins - Dumai in 8hrsbrFrom Dumai you can take other ferries to the towns up and down the east coast of SumatrabrFlights run daily from Batam to Dumai to Medan and Pekanbaru on Lion airbror flights run direct from KLIA and Singapore to Pekanbaru brThe new express toll road between Dumai and Pekanbaru has just opened making a 8hr trip takes 1hr 45mins now by carbr(Covid has made most of this impossible for the time been)
