One of the big difference that most people don't realize is the suburbs/ bordering cities/towns Edmonton has a lot more attached municipalities so the metro population of Edmonton is actually bigger than Calgary Calgary proper vs Edmonton proper, Calgary is bigger but Edmonton has a larger overall metro area, it has StAlbert, Leduc, Spruce Grove, Sherwood Park, Beaumont, Fort Sask, just to name a few This can be seen as an advantage since it gives more options for home buyers and renters that can live just outisde the city but easily commute to Edmonton for work, entertainment, etc Calgary doesn't have as many of those border town options, its just one giant place called Calgary

I'm not convinced a high speed rail link will ever link the two, but it's a shame Given our weather, it would be nice to jump from city to city to each airport, and to Banff and Canmore easily without having to worry about the road conditions It's a huge opportunity for the entire province

As an Edmontonian I’m accustomed to criticizing calgarians as narrow minded, overly conservative and generally think way too highly of themselves That said we are all Albertans and Canadians and we are all awesome Now Athabasca was considered for the capital as it was geographically central and the first oil discovery was near Devon just outside Edmonton Edmonton is the Gateway to the North and Calgary is more white collar As an Edmontonian I envy the transit system We have the Fringe which is one of the worlds best after Edinburgh Out Stantec Tower is the highest in the west Our new library is cool as is the Art Gallery

They are both beautiful cities with Calgary having pictureque mountains in the back drop and Edmonton with a huge canyon going through the middle Edmonton gets less yearly precipitation at 17 and Calgary get closer to 20 inches per year being closer to the mountains Also, Edmonton get more sunshine than Calgary because it days are quite a bit longer due to beingbr a couple hours more North than Calgary To those who think only Calgary gets chinooks this is falseall the western parts of Alberta gets chinooks including Edmonton

For Americans who are watching this and are interested in moving to Canada Alberta is the Most American province in Canada, this is often frowned upon by the rest of Canada because some of their values don’t really align Their tax is very low, especially compared to the rest of Canada, they have the most conservative government in Canada, and they people are more individualistic in contrast with the rest of Canada, albeit they are very friendly It is also worth noting that Calgary and Edmonton are large metropolitan centres so there will be more left leaning social and political values than the rest of the province (They both always vote NDP compared to the rest of the province which votes conservative)brbrThis being said, it is still quite progressive in contrast with its southern neighbours, and we love your interest and hope you visit sometime
