When I do something hard, I tell myself- if this was easy everyone would be doing it It helps brI'm currently not spending on anything but absolute necessities It's uncomfortable but I'm retraining myself It's kind of exhilarating because God always provides something I really want or need I just wait - sometimes for a long while -and it comes to me Comment from : Judith Arsenault |

While I agree that comfort can lead to stagnation, I also want to push back a little on the growth - progress - development ideology that underpins Bill Eckstrom's thinking Capitalist ideology (and its tag-team partner -- humanism) construct a way of thinking that assumes we must always be on a perpetual path of progress and development Some of the multispecies / post-humanism literature challenges that as a particularly modern (Capitalist) and anthropocentric paradigm For example, I just started reading The Mushroom at the End of the World: On the Possibility of Life in Capitalist Ruins by Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing, and it interests me because it suggests that growth and development are not the only ways of being alive in the world Comment from : Troy Martin |

The prevalence of comfort has had a detrimental impact on successive generations The proliferation of modern devices and electronic conveniences has led people to opt for ease in their daily lives For instance, individuals now have the ability to remotely turn off lights instead of walking to the wall switch, and they frequently choose to drive short distances rather than embracing the simplicity of walking This prevailing comfort has resulted in societies becoming complacent about their progress and development As a consequence, the hunger for achievement diminishes, and a sense of laziness takes rootbrbrInterestingly, it is discomfort that acts as a catalyst for change and growth When faced with challenges, the brain is stimulated to devise innovative solutions that eventually lead to greater comfort However, the quandary arises when individuals remain ensconced within their comfort zones By doing so, they inadvertently stifle their personal and collective growth, impeding any transformative changes in their lives Comment from : Adam Malik |

Very interesting talk and ideas Discomfort is necessary for growth Unfortunately, is our culture and more specifically universities fostering this environment or suppressing it? Hearing opposing ideas and ideologies that you find discomforting, offensive or "triggering" is necessary for maturation and development If one party's worldview is only endorsed and sanctioned with no room for alternative ideas or exchanges, this is extremely stagnating and limiting, especially for college students Freedom of speech is a vital element of American society but is being extinguished by those who deem certain ideas or viewpoints unacceptable or "hateful" to the particular parties Comment from : Alan |

Been consuming weed for about 3 years straight now, I've been doing pretty well creatively speaking but economically and practically it's been a rush Complexity, nonlinearity, chaos, is the essence of everything, an orderly disorder Seems funny when you realize life is something out of our depth yet we are critical of it I am about to smoke the last hits of my cannabis stash and, to be honest, after being in the same situation time after time, and telling to myself I am going to quit for good I actually believe this is THE moment A decision to embrace complexity from a different lence Thank you, Bill, your wisdom turned appreciation may lead more lifes to take the leap Now, let's simplify complexity Comment from : nuclei |

Your audience is huge Some or if not, majority in this world were born into the complexity and all we do is to adapt and resilient to the surrounding harsh environment We aren't leaving a discomfort to another discomfort state to grow, but rather still seeking the comfort state that you left for a better living experience! brThanks for sharing though! What a terrible talk This is the kind CEO nonsense that people think is inspiring but is all surface It's recycling Catholic dogma about suffering in this life for a better afterlife "Don't worry if you're life is full of hardship, that will make you successful like me So no nice things for you but I'm fine to have them now, as I've done dis-comfort Anyone know a good tennis coach for my dog, he's so lazy and anti growth?" It's interesting to me that this is spot on for fitness, diet, and weightlifting The real trick is having the motivation to constantly and consistently push yourself into the growth zone So few have the will power, focus and discipline to do this Comment from : R Normandy |
|
|
I think what he is trying to say to continually grow I life you need to continually challenge yourself to be better, even if it means being uncomfortable with doing certain things to get new skills and be more employable or be a better employer/ entrepreneur When he says "comfort" he might not be talking literraly, he is saying don't be too comfortable in your "comfortable situation" and become lazy and think it will last forever, you need to be versatile and be able to leave job and get employed easily in another job or make your own yourself Comment from : Sincerity |

For the basis it's a nice thought But I have to say: it also triggers me I was mobbed by my first boss as a 17 year old girl, yes, I did the 3 years of job training and finished it But the price - the discomfort - was way to high I had to go to therapy, I had breakdowns, my physical health was even disturbed This was too much I guess everyone has to find their level of discomfort which is healthy enough so you can still grow When he told the story about his daughter, it was very triggering I guess if someone would push me into a breakdown, I'd quit immediately If someone would talk to me like a grown up person, giving me criticism and talking about my future options, I'd stay and be happy to try something new, and grow So yeah idk It's nice that this helps some people, but I think there's more to that than simply just pushing yourself every day out of you comfort-zone With force Comment from : Vanessa XxDkdm |

1:32 What makes you comfortable can ruin you, and only in a state of discomfort, can you continually growbr2:06 br- , br- (knowing that what's happening in the environment is leading to the predictable outcome This is comfort Comfort is dangerous because you don't grow Remember: "Growth only occurs in the state of discomfort"), br- (nothing more than changed order When the order is changed outcomes are not as predictable This is the only environment where sustained or exponential growth can occur)br- (zero predicability or control over the outcomes),brbr2:43 The environments in which you work, live and play, they're all a proverbial fishbowl that dictates your growthbrbr11:31 we must experience the wilderness to be taught what cannot be otherwise known" Comment from : Denzelzeldi |
