Also, listening to this as I work on the Lego Rivendell set I have never made that big of a purchase and have spoiled myself so much Wasn't able to afford other large sets in general, when they came out years ago, so I'm very thankful for this now!

It's so strange but listening to this I was suddenly struck by how it echoes life: the innocence and ignorance of youth, oblivious to the wider troubles of the world; a growing awareness and realisation of the wider world as we take our part within it and decide what role we have to play; the struggles and hardships of life as we seek to fulfil our purposes; the sadness of regret and the toils one's journey puts on you; finishing with a poignant goodbye brbrI always seem to ride that emotional journey while listening to the soundtrack and the end always hits me so strongly because it's like a sadness of the past and a feeling that those things can never come back again and only relived through memory That's why it hits so much harder for me

Tolkien wanted three things from the Lord of the Rings He wanted it to be entertaining, to be thought-provoking, and to be emotionally moving That's it, really, that's the extent of his ambition for the books He says as much in the forewordbrbrI agree with the sentiment raised by some that the movies aren't as good as the books - but they're movies Tolkien himself said he didn't think they could ever do the books right as a movie, and it's true The books had more time to chew, to mull things over, to give everything the attention it deserves Movies can't do that or they dragbrbrThe movies aren't the books, and that's okay The books still exist I think there are three questions to ask about the moviesbrbr-Are they entertaining? I'd say absolutely There's plenty of gorgeous scenery, engaging performances, tight dialogue, and of course the musicbrbr-Are they thought-provoking? Certainly some of the nuance was lost, but there's enough to them that there's plenty left to walk away with, I feelbrbr-Are they emotionally moving? On this, the movies score every possible point I can give The books are better written, true, but the movies have Howard Shore Music provides an entirely new dimension to feel in The Last March of the Ents, the Ride of the Rohirrim, Sam and Frodo at Mount Doom The music carries the feeling deeper than words canbrbrThe movies aren't the books, they're no substitute But they are The Lord of the Rings That's a truth I'll fight anyone to protect

For anyone who is here in Fall 2022, I highly recommend you check out Bear McCreary's score for the new Rings of Power series Say what you will about the show itself (IMO it comes nowhere close to matching the original trilogy), but the music is EXCEPTIONAL, and while it may not be quite as good as the LotR soundtrack (nothing is), Bear really did Howard Shore proud It's an amazing achievement

I was fortunate to get the complete original recordings before they went out of printit is a massive amount of music spread over something like 10 discs and it can be daunting trying to sit down and pick a piece that I want to listen to This symphony takes many of the best highlights (though certainly not all--the details to be mined in Shore's magnum opus are deeper than the mines of Moria and the original performances are sublime) and presents them as a great highlight of the complete scores Listening to this music is a great way to visit Middle Earth or create your own world to explore
