In the US, the point of a debate is to win It's not about learning who is right or wrong That's how it's taught The speed reading crap is just a hyper form of Gish galloping; cramming as many arguments into your speaking time as you can, so hopefully your opponent can't respond to each of them

I have done debate classes in my university (in the Netherlands) and it was nothing like this You where given a few contentions and heard the last minute for which one you are arguing and if you are for or against In preparation you had to research the topics to make sure you can lend credibility to your arguments with evidence or to make sure you catch your opponent false statements It was slower and more like a chess game You would be very careful about what arguments to put forth and how to state them The goal was to win over the audience brbrI have never seen this type of 'debate', it looks more like a speed reading contest

@brettisrad It is called spreading The tactic of speaking incredibly fast (I read that some of the fastest debaters speak at 541 wpm, or just over 9 words per second), is in order to get more arguments out in a shorter time At first it was much slower and gradual, but became faster As of now it is very difficult to win against a team who spreads (most of them), without spreading yourself
