I grew up and spent most of my life in Oneida County 13 years ago, I left NY for Wisconsin I now have full coverage car insurance for half of what I used to pay for liability in NY I have a good paying job and pay less in taxes For such a beautiful state, NY politicians know how to ruin the economy

Grew up in Western New York and I just have to say that while Buffalo & Rochester might not have the skyscrapers that NYC does, both of those cities are architectural gems Buffalo by itself has 180 buildings listed on national register of historic places, it's city hall is one of the largest art deco public buildings in the entire United States, and it has the most Frank Lloyd Wright designed buildings outside of Chicago When you add Rochester with another art deco masterpiece known as the Times Square Building (with its topper called "The Wings of Progress") there are some truly fantastic architectural landmarks

I really think more effort could have gone to the real upset The Lake Placid area dubbed "the winter sport capital of the world" 1932, 1980 Olympic games plus the Empire games held with all the venues maintaining state of the art upgrades Montreal borders, and has diversities that rival NYC Its European culture is the closest resemblance you can experience without crossing the ocean Lake Champlain has its own monster, and gives access by water from Whitehall to Quebec, and the Atlantic Ocean

Once you get north of the Catskills or out of the Hudson Valley there’s very little cultural connection to NYC at all I always laugh when NYC residents talk about buying a house “Upstate” and what they really mean is Westchester or Dutchess or Ulster counties Not really Upstate

I drove 6hrs and travelled to buffalo last year thanksgiving weekend and felt like I was in another state The people are so damn nice felt like the Canadians really influenced them lol The food scene so damn good and great history Football team solid too I was like damn if it wasn’t so brutally cold in the winters I’d move here lol

Outside of NYC, NY State isn't a monolith either I spend a considerable amount of time throughout the year in Ithaca by the Finger Lakes, Beacon in the Hudson Valley, and my hometown of Manhattan (NYC) Saratoga Springs in the Capital Region is very different from any of these places

I am from Montréal, Canada, and I go on vacation to Lake George and the Adirondacks every year (before COVID), and I have been to Saratoga Springs, and after a day in this nice little town, you have seen everything that you can do there So, I understand that there is much more to do for a young woman, and a young couple, and now a young family in NYC In other words, you could not earn a living as a blogger in Saratoga LOL

As you mention, NYC is an artificial, man-made environment, that is what attracts tourists, but well-off NewYorkers get out of this Gotham City during the weekends and some commute from neighboring areas (like Westchester county, the Hudson Valley, or Connecticut) because they don't want to endure the hectic life of NYC

I've lived in upstate NY (Oneida county and Monroe county) but I've been to NYC many times now I feel like the primary difference is that upstate is a place of stability and NYC is a place of extremes Both have their strengths and weaknesses and appeal to different types of people

We just finished 10 days touring 14 colleges our experience of New York consisted of some upstate (driving from Columbus, OH to Ithaca, NY to Hannover, NH) & eventually NYC for a packed 24 hours (visiting Columbia, Morningside Park, Central Park, China Town, Little Italy, Time Square, Bryant Park, Occulus Station, 9/11 Memorial & Museum, Highline, & lots of subway rides)brbrOn the drive from Columbus to Ithaca to Hannover, Upstate New York was giving off strong Upstate Alabam feels (except for the "snowmobile crossing" signs )
