There is plenty of ASE Master + L1 Techs looking to make a move Just pay accordingly You won't though You want the 80 of the pie as an owner of an indy shop Guess what happens when every tech has his own shop? You lose and lose hard brbrStop the greed and fix it now or we walk and roll our tool-boxes away from you and into the SBA Comment from : R230Tuner |

High voltage cars aren’t making it easier and cleaner! Hv cars are dangerous to work in pay less for repairs and we make less money! Who wants t risk their life for a job I can do in a regular job get a little dirty have little to no risk of injury or death and make tons more money! Oh also on regular ice vehicles I’m not going to training nonstop! Should have a PhD by now! Comment from : Mark Moody |

"If you're good at something never do it for free" Mechanics should inflate their salaries requests at these dealerships😂 Comment from : MASSARMS |

The set up is not designed for one to succeed No investment in apprenticeships, one of the few jobs where we have to buy our own tools in order to do the bigger paying jobs brI also think the ASE certification needs to go away Many companies hide behind this so they don’t have to give pay raises unless you get ASE’s You take a test $300, fail well you’re out $300 You pass the company covers the cost but you may get just a $1 raise They know what’s going on but don’t wish to address anything to fix it brThey want to make the most amount of money off the customer and from the mechanic Comment from : Collin Baroh |

I believe the climate control people will force commers into public transportation There will be few cars on the road Comment from : subjectofgov |

I went and got my automotive certification back in 2016 but have been in the industry public and private since the age of 13 The issue is pay, I worked at Firestone for two years and demanded a raise since I was making 12 bucks an hour I never got the raise and quit because I got into truck driving Now I work on cars and trailers as a hobby and help friends and family if needed Comment from : Joseph Bernard |

When I was a tech, I would have to work 6 days/week, 12-14 hours a day to flag from 100-150 hours a pay period The flat rate pay was less than 10 of the shop hour charge for customers for most techs What also isn’t mentioned is that time is lost in several ways such as:br- looking for vehicle keys that the porters are still holding on tobr- parts not being available until later that daybr- taking the vehicle to the car wash and waiting in linebr- waiting for the service advisor br- diagnosis of intermittent complaintsbrbrBack in the day, Service Advisors were previously Auto Techs who eventually aged and still had the knowledge of the vehicles so that they can properly be a liaison between the tech and the customer Now they just hire any college kid who knows nothing about the industry There pay for them has also remained somewhat stagnant brbrI wish the news would ask people in the industry that actually have experience instead of analysts Comment from : Karl Hernandez |

In house training is a lie! A lot of dealerships are very cut throat They desperately want techs but are not willing to train and mostly because of work polotics and old geezers complaining and crying on how they think they are gonna get their jobs taken away from them by new blood I know they gotta make decisions on who gets the training of course because there are real idiots out there that should never work in a car But the ones that put the effort even after failing and getting back up are the ones getting shafted by not getting moved up They keep them in quick service to be getting taken advantage of by doing free work even if they are getting paid by flag rate just so management can look good to customers and get good CSI scores Comment from : Demon Of Cybertron |

Bullcrap 100k a year This industry has made joke of auto and diesel techs Dealerships use techs to repair warranty claims, all other repair work is an afterthought and looked at as privilege I have some regrets entering this industry and i want out We are expected to fix and diagnose everything that comes thru the door, but pay is on low end for years Thousands of $ is spent on tools by each tech and tech must keep buying tool's until retirement Btw this dealership manager is giving off some bad vibes in his comments I wouldnt want to work for you fella First lie you told is salary of 100k and you didnt mention warranty work once Comment from : Adel |
So we are not going to interwiew a mechanic???? Great reporting as always Comment from : Gabe S |

I’m going threw that now my car needs a water pump and the dealership are telling me that they are short and do not know when I’m getting my car back if this takes months Im gonna have to let my car go😭 Comment from : Tamara Ramos |

I’ve wanted to be a technician But it was not worth it Years of schooling and got paid more working at a gas station Not to mention the bosses I had yelling at you because a 30 minute book time job took you 18 minutes to do I worked for a ford dealer in 2010 I was paid $12/hour mostly part time 5 to 6 hours a day Rarely a 8 hour day There is no shortage of Techs here I can name 16 they don’t work as one because here you can’t make any money off it There are 36 garages within 50 miles of my house Comment from : Tenza |

If techs could make around 100k why isn’t the data reflecting that Comment from : Rosa Perez-Rojas |

Why weren’t any technicians /former techs interviewed?? Comment from : Rosa Perez-Rojas |

The problem with dealerships and manufacturers is they don't want to pay technicians for the time it takes to diagnose and repair the vehicle, when i worked for GM warranty only paid an average of 3 of an hour to diagnose a vehicle It takes that long to hook up the scanner and pull information from the vehicle computer To do a proper diagnosis it can take up to a couple of hours or more Comment from : Doug Turngren |
Dealership service centers have no actual product to sell The technician is the product A lot more places claim to have factory trained technicians happy to help you fix your car Big difference from ASE certified and factory certified technicians It's kinda like the music industry Management makes all the money and the talent kicks rocks Comment from : Always B Drivin |
Greed is the problem !brUntil shops pay a much larger percentage of that 150 dollar labor rate, there will always be a shortage of mechanics Comment from : Joseph Bosack |

These companies demand EVERYTHING from ya and won't pay a living wage Screw em ALL till they start paying Comment from : Misery, Hardship, and Grief 💩 |

Maybe the problem is that you’re going only after young people There’s a ton of people who are between 30s and 60s who would be more than willing to learn a new skill, and get a better job, but it seems everybody forgets that age group, and they just want young people, who, to be honest many of them don’t want those jobs, they’re not into those jobs, so you’re totally ignoring, a huge set of people that might be more than willing to do these jobs Comment from : Born to be Wild |

Lots of fancy sounding perks How about you simply pay $80 of the $100/hr? Comment from : BlackManOps |

See video at 5:21, this pay for technicians is the same it was -20- years ago Other trades pay far more On top of the poor public opinion of car mechanics in America, the problem is clear Automotive dealer management and owners need to be less greedy and pay more or they will be out of business Comment from : Jacks German Auto, Inc |
The flat rate is only part of the turn off how about the warranty work where you get paid only half of the regular flat rate for a job its the gift that heeps givingrecalls are pretty much the same thing you wont get a manufacturers to fix its short commings as long as those in dealerships are willing to do that slave laborive noticed that the folks that own the dealerships in this video dontseem tobring any of that up is thatnot surprising 😅 Comment from : Jesse LeBlanc |

Tech is a real hard job! Comment from : Jose Pena |

This was my job in the military for 20 years You have to stay on top of the new technology coming out or you are at risk of becoming obsolete You also will have to invest a sizeable amount of money into your tools throughout your career Comment from : EDDIE LEAL |
I'm not going to commit to an industry that let's the fickle government push it into things like super tight regulations on emissions and rushed, sloppy ev's and hybrids The manufacturers themselves turn me off with all there corner cutting and designed obsolescence We have had quality, very low maintenance, long lasting vehicles so why did that change?? Greed? Carelessness? Chinese holding companies owning the brands? The Volvo 240 was proof that simple, well made and very reliable was possible!! Comment from : Curtis Williams |

Flat rate pay sucks that's how i get paid I make good money but boy does it stress me out wondering if I flagged enough hours out of the day or not mechanics were paid hourly there probably be more of them if they were paid hourly Comment from : CSPuss |

Engineers could make there jobs mutch easier and you also have service managers that don't have a clue what a tech goes through nor do they care Comment from : chris miedzwicki |

There’s a SHORTAGE BECAUSE NOBODY WANTS BLOODY KNUCKLES and permanent body injuries FOR $15 an hour should be at least $50 for a master technician And that’s why most get smart and open their own shop or leave industry Comment from : Francisco Gomez |

well, I am a current student pursuing a Civil Engineering degree that will graduate in Spring 2024 , meanwhile I wanted to work for automotive mechanic in KIA, but I know I needed certification and license, but when I wanted to, like they try to make you less, meaning they want somebody already trained and licensed and be able to work full time… but in my case, I love working with cars and I like to fix them, I know the basic mechanic stuff, but actually I know a little bit more , but I am willing to learn more, but sadly mechanic shops , dealership, KIA etc they are not willing to invest time and money to learners like me … I am passionate about fixing cars, but they are closing doors to me Comment from : Jonathan Ostos |
How can the shortage be solved? Answer: you actually pay them what they've earned???😱 crazy🙄 Comment from : Isabella Lane |
Yep, the car industry is broken Any mechanic that has a brain will see themselves out of a dealership Its a young persons game and the good techs are aging out Good luck everyone! Comment from : ph1lthyvision |
Sun up to sun down 7days a week just to keep up with demand, very very few business pay a properly compensated wage and for the overall knowledge required it’s just not worth it! Almost half of my graduating class has left the trade by now Comment from : Tech28 |
If you wanna keep techs pay them what they are worth and get rid of the flat rate system, and stop shoving warranty recall work down our throats And have some service advisors that know about cars and actually sell the jobs for the tech Comment from : Pierre Remy |
These dealerships, shops and manufacturers are to blame If they stop screwing over techs they might have a different out come Don't believe me check out shop rates and how much the tech gets Also check out how much tools cost all that comes out of the techs pocket not the shopsometimes with exception to certain specialty tools Comment from : will |
Yes the pay is pretty bad compared to most trades I will say however, there are some pretty low quality repairs coming out of most shops at some point these days The younger generation doesn't seem to have that mechanical aptitude or seem take pride in the work they do like the mechanics of couple of generations ago Loose brake caliper slides, twisted brake flex hoses, wire harness pinned under valve cover, misdiagnosed oil leaks and noises, "sir you need a right front wheel bearing" when they really need an alternator I could keep going on and on Ask most of the younger guys the purpose of VCT or how an engine actually works and they probably wouldn't be able to tell you These are the people diagnosing drivability problems There are a lot of the older generation techs that still produce quality work and really know what they are doing but as they retire or leave the industry the inexperience of the younger techs is really starting to show I see lots of vehicles that were "repaired" by an independent shop or dealer incorrectly and the customer will refuse to go back to them because it was their third or fourth time trying to get their vehicle repaired correctly The shop thinks they fixed the vehicle correctly because they never see the customer again I think the video mentions trying to hire from other industries like a waiter from a restaurant Think about that for a minute Comment from : Resonance |

Mechanics invest too much money to work for a stealership Your salary depends on the shops traffic and could go way up or way down in a week Just not good for men with families and they move on to service writer or manager Comment from : Soul2Soul |

Is it still short Comment from : como dice |
There is no labor shortage Comment from : Clarity |
lol its not a generational shift, its the fact that we have to bend over backwards to diagnose and repair a modern vehicle and the pay simply doesnt reflect the amount of work Comment from : GLC522 |
I'd say CNBC has a journalist shortage also This story was pretty one sided 13 minutes on why there's a technician shortage and never once spoke to a tech But we got to hear the crying dealership owner Comment from : Kurt Andrews |
The reason for this is they want to pay the mechanics so little And they expect you to have a lot of tools A lot of times the service writer makes more than the mechanic Comment from : 1970chevelle396 |

Because dealers are not paying the technician All these mark ups but not paying there techs is the problem Comment from : MrBadluck |

Dealerships get essential pay for service and the technician don't see any at all Comment from : artemio sanchez |
If you want to keep techs, you need to pay them 50 of the hourly rate, you need to eliminate flat rate, you need to pay highly trained techs more than morons that do brakes and major services You must charge more per hour This ford manager is clueless, 100K for a top tech is not good pay That range of pay needs to literally double across the board, tools need to be supplied by the facility, and full health with 401K matching needs to be standard Regarding tools, what other job in the world requires an employee to spend 30-100k on tools, answer is zero Comment from : Mike Murphy |
Like most skilled jobsdevalued by people who are in charge this problem has been comimg for yearsto all those workshopmanagers etc who come in and made it their life to devalue the job and people and expect the best from poor wages this is the problem you have Created but that type will not give a shtthey will have made their money and left greed is the problem Comment from : From the heart |

Ask a master tech if they would want their kids or grandkids in the dealership tech industry i asure you they’ll say no Comment from : Elroys view |
I’m 23 and was working in a dealership and many of the master techs told me they used to make over 100k a year How am i supposed to be motivated to stay if the master techs are now making roughly 80k that’s a 20-30k$ drop Plus inflation being so high it just doesn’t make since… that’s not even including we have to provide our own tools and pay nearly 400-600$ a month for tool payments Comment from : Elroys view |

After over 20 years working a Dealership WARRANTY work made me have enough! Comment from : FT&B |
Auto mechanics are almost always men They can't be paid a decent wage because all male dominated jobs have to be lower paid than female dominated jobs to balance the wage inequality of the work force After all, it takes a lot of underpaying men to make up for 1 CEO that is paid 100 times what peons make Comment from : phlodel |
