the biggest culture shock for me when I went to Germany was the Dutch Toilet me and two friends rented a place outside of Munich for oktoberfest and we never encountered a toilet like that not everywhere had them, but Germany was where we discovered those exist brOther than that, I was surprised at how familiar Germany felt to me, cause I had never been there, I didn't know the language or much about the culture, however it felt like I had lived there before, even sometimes understanding people when they spoke And as cold as some germans were I did manage to hit it off with some people, and someone even tried to take me home with thembrout of everywhere I've been, I miss Germany the most honestly Comment from : Bonbonbon-bon Bon-bonbon |

What Americans perceive as rude is just people respecting personal boundaries I like this at restaurants I hate when waiters hover and are constantly checking on you Another important thing to know is not to arrive at someone’s house as a guest empty handed Flowers are the usual thing to take (btw flowers are inexpensive in Germany), Also I may be wrong but I believe in most restaurants you can bring your own wine Comment from : SUSAN TOM |

I’ve always been interested in visiting Germany…until seeing this video There seem to be too many “don’ts” and I didn’t hear that many “do’s” The drinking in public was interesting though Not that I want to get drunk in public, which I am sure would be incredibly boorish but dang, sounds to me like I’d be henpecked for faux pas that most people would commit in good faith Comment from : DoroteoVilla |

Yeah Got a big surprise when I had to pay by cash at restaurants in Germany (not all, but many restaurants only accept cash, especially small ones), and I had to walk for 16km to withdraw some since I didn't bring enough cash with me that time Cards (all kinds), Apple pay are useless sometimes Be ready for that :)) Comment from : Mai Vu |

Hi Feli, I just found your channel and I'm enjoying the comparison you make between the two countries One point I would disagree with you on is people not being as friendly I sent 20 years in the navy and made quite a few cruises over to the Med After retiring I worked with a programing software frame work from Germany In all my experiences with the different German people I met everyone was a memorable experience the I fondly look back on Comment from : Bill Semmendinger |

Having lived in Patrick Henry Village near Heidelberg for three years taught me a few lessons 1) Germans do not like you to bring your children into restaurants 2) If you want cream in your coffee, forget it, 3) Brothels are common and not obvious 4) nearly every community has a brewery 5) Cases of beer are often delivered to your door like we used to have dairy products delivered by the milkman 6) Keep your children off the streets, if they were hit, you could be sued by the driver 7) pharmacies only have prescription drugs 8) German produce does not include sweet corn, corn is for hogs 8) Sometimes you will find lard used as salad dressing in buffets 9) Hungarian goulash will bring tears to your eyes 10) Italian Pizza crust is flaky like American pie crust 11) You won't find ice cream 12) Volksmarching is a favorite pastime for Germans on weekends It involves walking down country roads with stops along the way to buy beer and at the end you receive a unique badge for your hat Comment from : Randy Stalding |

Germany is just one region of the beautiful country called Europe, where you can travel everywhere without borders, you can choose where to live and where to work, see many cultures, learn many languages, see different places and where you are free Well, many europeans still have to learn this, but its quite a nice place Come to Europe and decide what you like Comment from : T D |

My only complaint about movies/television shows being dubbed into English is that it sounds like there are only like 8 voice actors They all sound the same I never noticed it while still living at home, but once I moved to the states in 1993 it blew my mind to realize that the American/British actors that actually voiced/played the part sounded all very different whereas the dubbed version sounded like one voice actor for 27 different American or British actors drives me nuts now when I go home to visit familyLOL Comment from : Conny |

Spent 2 years at Rhein-Main AFB 78-79, explored Frankfurt with fellow airmen on occasion, have a handful of stories, I do remember some bars would not let US military in, we knew why, during our in briefing where told to expect it would happen sense at times when army were stationed temporarily at RM they were known to start fights in downtown bars But the majority of bars were more than welcoming especially if they had live music, more often than not it was a US 😮citizen playing the folk rock music of the 70s Also remember Germans loved our Marlboro cigarettes , I have no idea how many cartons I gave away during that 2 years I’m part German, my grandfather on my mothers side was Schadd, originally Schad, grandpaw changed it thinking they would let him join the army during WW2 if he did, they refused to take him sense he was of German decent Comment from : Michael Ray Cossey |

I keep misreading your (current) username as having two L's (Tut mir leid! 😇) and this reminds me of the way Germans describe trains being cancelledbrbrb„Zug fällt aus“/b or, in English; „The train has fallen out“ 🚆⤵😆brbr(Of course, they're saying iThe train has fallen out /ibiof the timetable/i/b But living in a country where the railways are having the very life asset-stripped out of them, this is probably going to become a literal thing here in the next few years 🚅🇬🇧⤵😲) Comment from : Diesel Dragon |

i have been going to Germany for about 7 years and i,m English ,so i don't find the Germans stand offish I found it to be a very clean country and beautiful Being English we cross the road at any point and you can see the frustrations on a Germans face the one thing you did miss was the extra payment for a plastic bottle and the expected return of the bottle As i am learning German ,its hard to get into a conversation with a German because they do convert to English and even there bad English is still better than my bad German Comment from : derek palmer |

I'm really really shocking about this videobrBecause if you need to said it, directly, in a video Means that American cannot think about thatbrI mean, how can people move in another country and think it's like at home?brI am also an expat, but come on Have euro in pockets it's normal The Benz more espensive like in usa it's normal, the empty house also, the dimension of the house also, follow the rules Come on guys, we must really see "please follow the rules"?brbrDo you know what look like?br"usa arrogance", in one wordbrWhen a person go out of their country (as I did) MUST think with "EVERYTHING is different"brOf course, I had less difficult because the money and plug in is the same in all EuropebrBut all the rest of stuffs it's pretty normal in another country Comment from : Mikichan85 |
|
While at the Bremen HBh I wanted to get some lunch and went into a deli on site I asked for something off the menu and the woman taking my order smiled and said in good English, not until you say it properly in German, she coached me through the process and we laughed the whole time It was also an excellent meal, way better than you could get in any Canadian railway station This was one of the highlights of the trip, even though it was a short encounter I found the Germans I spoke to to be open and warm people I'm not saying you are wrong as I may have just found the exception, but I remember that fondly so many years later Comment from : David Shepherd |

Also about jaywalking: you're allowed to cross next to the light, not directly at the light, at any time you want if I remember correctly Walking over a red light is a legal offence, but crossing a road not at a traffic light is allowed, just your own responsibility This does NOT go for the Autobahn and the Bundesstraße Walking on either of these is a crime except for specific circumstances and also likely suicide Comment from : Joanne August |
|
About restaurants: A definite NO to seating yourself from a waitress here! ALWAYS wait to be seated You never know what system the restaurant has, what table may be recently reserved - and you're guaranteed much faster service because the personell actually SEES YOU that way How many times have some folks just walked past our restaurant into the EMPTY garden, sat at a table and wondered why we didn't come to them Maybe it's because we don't run out into the empty garden every three minutes to check if it's still empty?brAnd YES to free water Water from bottles is paid for, tap water on the other hand is other hand CAN be free Statistically, that's the case in 50 of German restaurants, the rest takes a (usually small) fee Comment from : Joanne August |
